Garlic

Maybe you ask yourself what is so interesting about writing about Garlic, even in Skyrim?

No doubt that Garlic is not Nirnroot and it is not amongst the most important alchemy and cooking ingredients and writing about every single kitchen and alchemy ingredient in Skyrim may seem like complete madness.
Garlic braids hanging from the ceiling in dungeon.
Yes, but... There is something almost magical about garlic braids hanging above blacksmiths forge or simple house fireplace when you just came in and few seconds ago you heard door shutting behind you. Furthermore if you came from tough winter lands or dangerous swamp to warm yourself by the fire, it is beautiful to see, when you look up, friendly warm lights dancing on hanging garlic, usually surrounded by Frost Miriam, Elves Ears and various animal meat - mostly rabbit or pheasant. It is warm and friendly atmosphere of home that Garlic reminds me.

Maybe you are curious whether vampires in Skyrim are affected by Garlic in any way. Surprisingly they are not. If your character is a vampire, he or she may enjoy eating Garlic without worries. What is surprising too is the fact that in whole Skyrim do not grow any single garlic plant. You can only harvest garlic braids from the ceiling or collect single bulbs from barrels and baskets.

If you love garlic for its specific taste in real life, you can use it for cooking in Skyrim as well. Enjoy your tasty meal with following recipes.

Beef Stew
To cook this you need one Carrot, one Garlic, one Raw Beef and one Salt Pile. Eating Beef Stew will increase your Stamina by 25 points for 720 seconds. It will also restore 2 points of Stamina per second for 720 seconds.

Garlic Bread
Mix together one Garlic, one Butter and one Bread. When eaten it will restore 1 point of Health, and, what is far more better, it will cure all diseases.

Horker Stew
One Garlic, one Horker Meat, one Lavender and one Tomato will result in Horker Stew. After eating it will restore 15 points of Stamina and Health. Furthermore it will restore 1 point of Health per second for 720 seconds.

Tomato Soup
One Garlic together with one Leek, one Salt Pile and one Tomato will result in Tomato Soup. When eaten it will restore 10 points of Stamina and Health.

However do not forget magical powers of Garlic. Garlic as alchemy ingredient has great use for Regenerating Magicka and Health as well as Resisting Poison and Fortifying Stamina.

Here I made the list of ingredients matching with Garlic sorted by the same alchemy effect.

Resist Poison - mix Garlic with
Beehive Husk, Charred Skeever Hide, Falmer Ear, Grass Pod, Mudcrab Chitin, Slaughterfish Egg, Thistle Branch, Troll Fat, Yellow Mountain Flower

Fortify Stamina - mix Garlic with
Boar Tusk, Chaurus Eggs, Large Antlers, Lavender, Slaughterfish Egg, Torchbug Thorax

Regenerate Magicka - mix Garlic with
Dwarven Oil, Fire Salts, Jazbay Grapes, Moon Sugar, Salmon Roe, Salt Pile, Taproot

Regenerate Health - mix Garlic with
Emperor Parasol Moss, Gleamblossom, Juniper Berries, Luna Moth Wing, Namira's Rot, Nordic Barnacle, Vampire Dust

Garlic are usually found in houses hanging in braids from the ceiling. It is also to be found in almost every kitchen, on tables inside caves and forts. It can usually be bought in any alchemy store.
In greater amount Garlic can be found for example in the following locations.

In Bits and Pieces you can pick several garlic braids.
In Faendal's House in Riverwood you can find two garlic bulbs.
Sven and Hilde's House in Riverwood contains several garlic braids and bulbs.
House Gray-Mane contains a bowl full of garlic.
Inside Boulderfall Cave is a basket half full of garlic bulbs.
Garlic can be found inside Swindler's Den, Fort Hraggstad, Driftshade Refuge and Meeko's Shack.
Of course this list is not complete and on your own journeys you can find more locations.

Laelette

In your journeys in Skyrim when you spend some time in Morthal, involving quest Laid to Rest, amongst many characters you meet Laelette.

Unfortunatelly you and Laelette will not enjoy each other for long.

The first and last interaction with Laelette is limited to only one - Laelette will attack you in Morthal cemetery when you both are searching for Helgi.

Who then Laelette is?

She is a vampire and servant of Alva. She used to be wife of Thonnir. After Alva (also vampire) turned her she spreaded rumours (especially because of her husband was searching for her) that Laelette escaped with Stormcloaks.

When Alva fell in love with Hroggar (and wanted to keep him as her servant and protector of her coffin forever) she commanded Laelette to kill his wife and daughter and make it look like an accident.

However Laelette failed to do it properly and instead she burned house with Hroggar´s wife and daughter inside. While burning Laelette´s heart moved and she tried to save Helgi, Hroggar´s daughter from death. She gave Helgi her vampire blood but it was too late and the girl died anyway.

Later Laelette became obsessed with Helgi and came to cemetery every night trying to bring Helgi back to life. And finally, that is where you and Laelette meet.

Benor

In a swampy and foggy town Morthal you can find your faithful fellow - Benor. This man helps guards to protect the town and when you meet him for the first time he will challenge you to a fight considering himself the best fighter in Morthal. If you win he will follow you on your travels when asked.

Usually you can meet him on a bridge neer Moorside Inn where he spends most of the day. In evenings he can be found in Moorside Inn. He sleeps in Guardhouse with town guards.

He is tough man using his muscles and any magic power is suspicious to him. Maybe for this he disapproves mage Falion´s presence in town as many others town folks.

Even with so though look as Benor has he has been proposed by Alva to begin a romance with her behind her man´s back. He refused.

That means except the point that he is an honest man that he is free for marriage if your character is a female.

If you marry him you can enjoy an advantage, very curious one in my opinion, to meet him in his house - in Guardhouse where he sleeps with guards (you must break in to do this).

Ysolda

When you go through Whiterun gates and follow the path to the marketplace among many people there you can meet Ysolda.

She is one of my favourite characters in Whiterun maybe because she is so keen on trading as well as I am. And because of her beautiful look as well. She is very serious about running a business. If certain Whiterun merchants die or get killed she takes over their businesses.

You may learn Speechcraft from her in exchange for Mammoth Tusk you bring to her (here I must confess I stole one for this purpose).

Ysolda can be married. Here I sometimes regret my Skyrim character is a female.

Tundra Cotton

When you cross plains around Whiterun among many plants you can find Tundra Cotton. It can be found in tundra areas as well. This beautiful and stubborn plant has great use in Alchemy for creating Resist Magic potion and much more. For me it is white stubborn princess bringing spirit of beauty to grey rocks and stony paths.

Luna Moth

It is always a pleasure wandering open lands at deep night. Paths and fields are usually decorated with some kind of insect you cannot meet in daylight.

Amongst them I find Luna Moth the most beautiful. Luna Moth Wing is mentioned e.g. in Herbalist Guide of Skyrim as important ingredient for creating Invisibility Potion. I fully undersand what author meant when she felt pityful about destroying such beautiful creature just for a pair of wings.

High Hrothgar

Welcome to High Hrothgar, home of Greybeards. When you reach High Hrothgar after all that steps higher and higher, it is really satisfying to see the goal of your path.
